Gutters

As we all start to make our homes ready going into the warmer weather some simple projects can be done now that will prevent long-term damage and potential insurance claim denials should anything happen to your home in the future.

Here’s a simple spring yard and home exterior checklist to tackle now:

  • Cut back shrubs at least 24” from your home. Plants are a highway for pests and promote organic growth which will degrade your siding.
  • Trees should be maintained so limbs do not overhang your roof which can allow for the growth of damaging moss to accumulate on the roof surface. While moss and ivy can be aesthetically pleasing, below the surface your home is being broken down and creating a potential for water to enter.
  • Observe if any tree or shrub root systems are encroaching on your home. This can adversely impact your home’s foundation causing cracks where water can enter.
  • Clean out gutters from any leaf and branch debris that may have created a blockage. Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause the wood trim at the eaves to rot, and that can invite all kinds of pests into your attic space.
  • Ensure your downspouts are diverting water away from the foundation. Water that pools near the foundation can eventually deteriorate the structure and be a potential for flood risk.
  • Inspect and repair any gaps between your trim and exterior siding or any other area along your windows and doors. Apply new caulk or remove and replace the caulk along these lines.

Investing in your greatest investment

These may seem like common sense but all too often we overlook the simple things. Keeping up with exterior maintenance is essential to extending the well-being of your home.

“If you take care of your home, it will take care of you,” says Russ Von Frank, Director of Operations at Madison Ave Construction. This is true on many levels. Not only in the most direct sense that your home provides warmth, comfort and security, but for most of us, our home is our greatest investment and maintaining it is a must so that one day it may provide for you and future generations.
